Homestead Hurricanes Swim Team

The Homestead Hurricanes swim team started in 1978 and is comprised of swimmers as young as 4 and as old as 18. The Hurricanes' swim season (summer) typically kicks off in mid-May with team tryouts.

The tryout is open to children of all skill levels and consists of swimming the length of the pool (any stroke) without stopping or grabbing on a lane rope or the side of the pool.

There are six age groups classifications: 6 & Under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 15-18. Children receive coaching and instruction per age group.

While the swim team certainly provides for fun environment for Homestead youth to socialize, all team members have the opportunity to compete in five swim meets against other neighborhood swim teams such as Homestead Farms, Sundance Hills, and Cherry Creek Vista. Swimmers who participate in 2 meets are eligible to swim the hallmark event of the summer swim season—the Age Group Preliminaries and (if qualifying times are fast enought) the Finals.

HOMESTEAD SWIM TEAM ORGANIZATION

Each year a set of two Homestead Neighborhood parents are selected to manage all aspects of the swim team, such as interviewing and hiring the coaches for the upcoming season to acting as a liaison to the Homestead HOA.

Not only are the 'Parent Representatives' volunteers, but they in turn also rely on parent volunteers from Homestead to serve as Committee Chairpersons or in other roles of service. The phenomenal level of volunteer effort given each year by Homestead Hurricane swim team parents is unmatched by any swim team organization in our league and is an example that many want to replicate.

SWIM MEETS

Typically two to three of the five summer swim meets are held at the Homestead North swimming pool. When Homestead hosts a meet, all functions of the meet are run by parent volunteers generally operating in shifts throughout the meet. These functions include:

  • Homestead Swim Team Tent Set Up
  • Pool Setup
  • Concessions Set Up and Operation
  • Swimmer Heating (getting swimmers for their events)
  • Starter & Referee
  • Stroke Judges
  • Timers
  • Scoring
  • Event Announcer
  • Volunteer Coordinator

When parents register their children for the Hurricane swim season they are asked to volunteer in one of these positions for our home meets. The volunteer responsibility also extends to the week of the Age Group Preliminaries and Finals.

TRADITION

While the Homestead Hurricane swim team has forged many lifelong friendships for our youth, it has provided the same for the adults. And, not only has our neighborhood reaped the social benefits, but our youth have also been responsible for creating and maintaining a tradition of competitive excellence as Homestead has won the overall League Finals for its division 29 times. As part of that process it has also won numerous first place Age Group awards.

...BESIDES SWIMMING

There are numerous events surrounding the swim meets including meet pep rallies, a pasta party, a pancake breakfast, parent party, and an end of season Film Night!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN SWIM LEAGUE

The Rocky Mountain Swim League (RMSL) was established to provide an opportunity for young people to develop swimming skills and gain a positive recreational swimming experience through competition. This year, the League structure has changed from three divisions to four divisions with the addition of Sundance Hills Swim team. The League is now comprised of 19 neighborhood teams. The divisional breakdown is determined based on the point standing of each individual teams' previous season's win-loss, finals finish, and team size. RMSL provides an organized framework within which coaches, competitors, parents, and league officials operate with courtesy, good will and sportsmanship.
